Endelig ferdig!

Håndarbeid er aldri lett. Da jeg tok ut farger til genseren i sommer valgte jeg mørk brun til reinsdyrene. Godt i gang med strikkingen ble det etter hvert klart at mørk brun og mørk grønn ikke fungerte. Brunfargen forsvant. Dermed var det bare å rekke opp, og starte på nytt. Beige reinsdyr er egentlig mer naturtro. Nå lyser de opp. Veldig bra!

Varm oransje votter passer til appelsinsspisende skiløpere i påskefjellet. Noen synes det ble for utradisjonelt fargevalg. Da er det fiks med editing meny. Der finnes mange kreative muligheter for fotoredigering. Fotoaktiviteten effekter tilbyr valg om å presentere bildet i sort-og-hvitt. Voilá, med et trykk på tastaturet, ble påskevottene forvandlet til tradisjonelle med fargene sort-og-hvitt. Heldigvis var den opprinnelige bagrunnen grå farge. Dermed ble det helt og holdent et sort/hvitt utrykk.

The creative possibilities of editing photos are many. In the editing menu I changed the color warm orange to black-and-white. Some people thought the warm orange color wash too rich. Therefore, I wanted to show how they may look like in the traditional colors black-and-white.

Lyse farger må det være!

Brrr...! Sist søndag våknet vi til til dalende snøfiller, som la seg som et teppe av andedun over landskapet. På denne tiden av året er ikke fnugglette engledryss fra himmelen koselig og idyllisk. Det er utrivelig, og iskaldt. Isbjørner hadde kost seg, og prinsen av Wales!! Leser i nyhetene at den engelske prinsen planlegger et opphold i isen på Svalbard. Det innebærer en alldeles egen historie, men at vi i nord faktisk bor rett i nærheten av Nordpolen og arktiske områder er sikkert og visst. Plassert i en sammenheng er ikke nord bare et kaldt øde i ingenmannsland, men et eksotisk og interessant reisemål for mange. Vi andre derimot,som har Nordlys (Aurora Borealis) som en del av hverdagslivet, fryser! Nå vil vi ha vår og sommer!! Votteprosjektet mitt er derfor valgt i lyse og lette farger - slik vi ønsker en typisk Skandinavisk vårdag skal være.

Pause i sukkertøyfargene. Disse vottene har fått den tradisjonelle, klassiske Skandinaviske reine hvite og blå fargen. Mønsteret fant jeg i boken av amerikanske Terri Shea, som bl.a. hentet inspirasjon til oppskriftene i boken fra Nordic Heritage Museum i Seattle. Det er litt arbeid med disse vottene, men det hører med. Ikke sant? Nå er det bare å få de ferdig.

Brrr...! Sunday we woke up to falling snowflakes, which covered the landscape like a goose feather blanket. At this time of the year, pure angel white snowflakes from the sky is not nice and idyllic at all. It is ice cold and unpleasant. Truly, a reminder we live close to the Arctic Circle, and belong to the northern hemisphere. But, we are not polar bears! Unlike Prince Harry of Wales, who make plans to escape the paparazzi photographer of London and travel to the icy landscape of Norway´s arctic Island Svalbard, we long constantly for spring and summer at this time of the year. Indeed, The Svalbard Islands, located halfway between Norway and the North Pole in the Arctic Ocean, with Northern lights (Aurora Borealis), with scientists from all over the world, with powerful untouched wilderness etc., are much, much more then our everyday lives in the snowy countryside of Swedish Lapland or Northern Norway!! But for us who is a part of this northern region, for example, the Northern lights (Aurora Borealis) is a common phenomenon that is a part of our daily lives during the winter months. Therefore, no wish to travel further north at this time of the year. What is the magic Northern lights? It can be seen on the sky in the winter and is as follows: "The Northern lights (Aurora Borealis) is caused by particles from the sun colliding with gases in the atmosphere, at an altitude between 100-120 kilometers." Regardless, the above mittens are chosen in bright, light colors that reflects a typical Scandinavian spring or summer day.

As you probably have noticed the candy colors have dominated lately, but the color scheme on these mittens, are the Scandinavian simple pure white and blue. The pattern is from a knitting book of the American author; Terri Shea. She made the book in cooperation with the Nordic Heritage Museum i Seattle. These mittens take some time, but it is worth it! Don´t you agree?

Hvite Votter - White Mittens

Hel lengde: 21,5 cm - Lengde tommel: 5 cm.

Inspiration:

What a chilly cold winter it´s been. When it is at its wildest outdoor, indoor warmth gives energy to start new projects. And, as you all already know it is strawberry season in my house. Irresistible, the berries and the pure white snow gave inspiration to my latest design journey of a new collection of mittens. I particulary like the contrast combination of the color from Scandinavian clear sparkling white snow, and the ruby red fresh color of hot summer strawberries.

Process:

I chose felting as knitting(fiber) technique to this knitting project. As you can tell from this photo one has to make the mittens in a huge size. These are made with double pointed needles size 6 mm. I casted on 32 stitches. To felt the yarn must be 100 % wool (- 100% Laine - 100% Lana). Finally, machine wash in hot water and rinse cold and machine dry. Now, the mittens are lovely, soft and warm. The softness of the mittens are very important, and I had to carefully choose yarn for this project. The fibers in the mittens should allow the fingers to move freely.

Polka Dots og Hjerteformede knapper.

Å bruke knapper til pynt er den enkle måten å dekorere på. Sist høst fikk jeg en kolleksjon med gamle vintage knapper av min tyske venninne, Heidi. Det eneste hun ønsket var at jeg fant en måte å bruke dem på nytt. På disse vottene er de brukt til pynt. Et tips kan være å lage en løkke festet til den ene votten. Nå kan knappen på den andre votten festes i løkken. Vottene holdes samlet, og er kanskje et tips for alle som har barn i barnehage?

Polka Dots and Heart Shape Buttons.
Last fall I got a collection of old vintage buttons from my German friend, Heidi. Her only wish was her hope for reuse or recycling. There are several project finalished with her buttons, and this pair of Scandinavian felted winter white mittens are one of them. Decorated with one pair of heart shaped buttons, and one pair of polka dots buttons. An easy way to decorate.

Tip: A tip may be to make a loop and attach it to one mitten, and then the button placed on the other mitten can be attached to the loop. Now, the mittens stay together. Perhaps a useful idea for anyone with children in kindergarten?

Håndbroderte og strikket for hånd i ren norsk ull. Det ble hentet inspirasjon fra blomstene til Nordlandsbunaden. Garnet er Rauma Ull to-tråds og pinner nr. 2.5 og 2.0. Fordi dette er et håndplagg til bunad synes jeg det er viktig at det gjøres enkelt og uten alt for mange farger og broderier. Tanken er at de må for all del ikke ta oppmerksomheten bort fra bunaden. Old=New

Hand-embroidered and knitted by hand in pure Norwegian wool. Inspired by the flowers of my national costume called; "Nordlandsbunad". Knitted in Norwegian Rauma Ull yarn, two-wire and double pointed needle No. 2.5 and 2.0.

The purpose of this garment is to protect your fingers on a cold day. Remember to keep it simple. Too many colors and embroidery can distract the art of the beautiful costume.

Broderi etter Lølandmønster - Rogalandsbunad Husfliden

Broderi etter mønster fra forkle til Vestfoldbunad.

These Fingerless Gloves are perfect to match my national costume at the 17th of May when waving my flag, or to use just about anywhere when it´s a bit too cold to work without something covering your hands. The yarn brand is Norwegian Rauma yarn. 100% wool, and can only be purchased at certified dealers. The color off-white is perfect to match anything. After reading the direction, I decided the easiest way to really learn this would be to translate it to English. It forced me to think through every stitch and row. I´ve designet the gusset so there is one seeming stitch involved. I prefer to knit the first stitch on every row of the thumb in purl (P). Also, I´ve tried to give instruction so that there is absolutely no holes to speak of when adding stitches. This is the first knitting pattern to translate from Norwegian to English and I´m sure there are a few mistakes, please do not hesitate to drop a comment. I then will be able to correct the mistake, and prevent others from making the same. Thanks, and good luck!

KNITTING INSTRUCTION - NORWEGIAN FINGERLESS GLOVES (First photo from the top - 1st place in a local knitting competition issued by The Norwegian Association of Arts & Crafts ):

Materials: 100% wool, Rauma Yarn, Off-White, 2 treads, 50 gram

1 set double-point needles size 2,5 mm, and 1 set double-point needles size 2 mm.

Stitch holder or waste yarn

Small tapestry needle to weave in ends.

Stitch explanation:

p = purl

k = knit

psso = pass stitch slip on to next needle, or slip 1 stitch as if to knit

K2 tog = knit 2 stitches together

1YO = cast yarn between two stitches.

Start as follows: On double pointed needles cast on 66 stitches. Place loops on 4 separate needles size 2.5 mm.

Work in the round as follows:

Row 1 : P1, K 10 - Repeat to the end.

Row 2 : P1, K2 tog, K2, 1YO (cast yarn between to stitches), K2, 1YO, K2, 1psso (slip 1 stitch as if to knit), K1 and slip the psso over the last K1. Repeat this pattern in the round.

Continue row 1 and row 2 until piece measures 7 cm.

On last row bind off as follows to 54 sts: Knit row 2, but do not 1YO (cast), and the row will adjust to 54 sts.

Knit one round. Change to double pointed needles size no. 2 mm.

Start thumb gusset:

K1, add a sts. (Without getting a hole just knit into the loop made by the stitch under the next stitch and then knit the next stitch on the left needle).

K3, add sts.

Repeat this round on every fourth (4) row until 15 sts are added.

(Tips: You may place a marker before and after the K3 in the middle).

Place the 15 sts for thumb gusset onto waste yarn, or stitch holder. Replace the ten (10) slipped stitches from right needle back to left needle. The round now has 61 stitches.

Continue knitting round until you have reached a comfortable lenght (5 cm) after the thumb. P last row and bind off all stitches.

For thumb:

Pick up stitches from waste yarn and using working yarn pick up two stitches from the sides. 22 stitches. K in the round until the thumb measure 2 cm. P last row, and bind off.

Begynn økning til tommel:
Strikk 1 m, ta opp 1 m, strikk 3 m, ta opp 1 m.
Øk på hver 4. omg. til det er 15 m (medregnet de 3 i midten). Sett maskene på en tråd. Legg opp nye 10 m, 61 m på omgangen.
Strikk til passe lengde på pulsvanten, ca. 5 cm etter tommelen. Den siste omg. strikkes vr, før en feller av.

Tommelen strikkes ca 2 cm før den siste omg. strikkes vr. og felles av.

Broderiet er fra broderiet på Husflidens bunad, og sydd med garnet som hører til. Mønsteret kan overføres ved å tegne det på matpapir, og så trokle etter tegningen, plukke vekk papiret og så brodere etter tråklingen. Eller en kan tegne det direkte på med tusj eller blyant.

Pakken med garn og mønster kjøpte jeg i butikken på Nordanå Museum i Skellefteå. Så at de ville passe perfekt til bunaden 17 mai!! Historien om designeren er veldig rørende - God lesing!!
I bought the instructions and materials at Nordanå Museum in Skellefteå. My intention was to make the gloves to wear with my National Costume - Nordlandsbunaden -. With the cold weather in Norway they are truly a must. I like them a lot!!

The story of designer Brita Kajsa Karlsdotter is as follows:
Brita Kajsa Karlsdotter lived a hard life where the struggle for bread and food was her most important task each day. She was good and generous. Her strong religious beliefs gave her strength through the difficulties she met in her every day life. Often, her embroideries are signed with the letters ARTHG which means All The Glory Belong To God.

She was very poor. The material she used for table cloths were pieces of used sheet - recycling - återvinning - gjenbruk - even in the 1800s! She picked the part of the sheet that was in the best condition. More, she picked the red cotton threads of a glass towel to use for embroidering. Great idea for recycling!!

Her inspiration is from the nature in her surroundings. It was pine and Wild Swedish summer flowers. To make the pattern she had to tore into the fabric directly by using her nails or the needle. All her works are different, but her compositions may be repeated. Old = New!!

Nordic sweaters have an interesting history. Originally, Nordic sweaters only came in black or white. These were the natural colors of sheep´s wool. Soon sweaters became high fashion, and people began combining other colors. Next knitters began experimenting with patterns, but usually on the very top of the sweaters because Nordic people tucked their sweaters down into baggy pants. Later, more intricate patterns emerged as people decided to combine function with fashion and wear their Nordic sweaters to events such as church.
